NGC & Other Catalogs

April 2nd, 2011

This page contains images from various catalogs, mostly NGC, not included within Charles Messiers list.

The New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars (NGC) is a well-known catalogue of deep sky objects in astronomy. It contains 7,840 objects, known as the NGC objects. The NGC is one of the largest comprehensive catalogues, as it includes all types of deep space objects and is not confined to, for example, galaxies.

The Caldwell Catalogue is an astronomical catalog of 109 bright star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies for observation by amateur astronomers. The list was compiled by Sir Patrick Caldwell-Moore, better known as Patrick Moore, as a complement to the Messier Catalogue.

The Index Catalogue (IC) —also known as the Index Catalogue of Nebulae, the Index Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars, IC I, or IC II— is a catalogue of galaxies, nebulae and star clusters that serves as a supplement to the New General Catalogue. It was first published in 1895, and has been expanded to list 5,387 objects, known as the IC objects.

IC1318 Gamma Cygni Buttefly

The Sadr region, or IC 1318, is the diffuse emission nebula surrounding Sadr or Gamma Cygni. Sadr lies in the center of Cygnus' cross. The Sadr region is one of the surrounding nebulous regions, others include the Butterfly nebula and the Crescent Nebula. It contains many dark nebulae in addition to the emission diffuse nebulae.

IC1396

The Elephant's Trunk nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust in the star cluster IC 1396 – an ionized gas region located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light years away from Earth.

IC5146 Cocoon Nebula

IC 5146 (also Caldwell 19, Sh 2-125, and the Cocoon Nebula) is a reflection/emission nebula and Caldwell object in the constellation Cygnus. IC 5146 refers specifically to the star cluster and Sh2-125 to the nebula. Dark nebula Barnard 168 (B168) is an inseparable part of the experience, forming a dark lane that surrounds the cluster and projects westward forming the appearance of a trail behind the Cocoon.

The Veil Nebula

The Western Veil (also known as Caldwell 34), consisting of NGC 6960 (the "Witch's Broom") near the foreground star 52 Cygni. The Eastern Veil (also known as Caldwell 33), whose brightest area is NGC 6992, trailing off farther south into NGC 6995 and IC 1340. Pickering's Triangle (or Pickering's Triangular Wisp), brightest at the north central edge of the loop, but visible in photographs continuing toward the central area of the loop.

NGC2024 & IC434 The Horse Head and Flame Nebula

The Flame Nebula, designated as NGC 2024 and Sh2-277, is an emission nebula in the constellation Orion. The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33 in emission nebula IC 434) is a dark nebula in the constellation Orion

NGC2174 The Monkey Head Nebula

NGC 2174 is an H II emission nebula located in the constellation Orion and is associated with the open star cluster NGC 2175.

NGC2903 Barred Spiral Galaxy

NGC 2903 is a barred spiral galaxy about 30 million light-years away in the constellation Leo.

NGC4244 Edge on Spiral Galaxy

NGC 4244, also Caldwell 26, is an edge-on loose Spiral galaxy and Caldwell object in the constellation Canes Venatici.

NGC4565 The Needle Galaxy

NGC 4565 (also known as the Needle Galaxy or Caldwell 38) is an edge-on unbarred spiral galaxy about 30 to 50 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices.

NGC6888 The Crescent Nebula

The Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888 or Caldwell 27) is an emission nebula in the Cygnus constellation, about 5000 light years away. It is formed by the fast stellar wind from the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 (HD 192163) colliding with and energizing the slower moving wind ejected by the star when it became a red giant around 400,000 years ago. The result of the collision is a shell and two shock waves, one moving outward and one moving inward. The inward moving shock wave heats the stellar wind to X-ray emitting temperatures.

NGC6946 The Fireworks Galaxy

NGC 6946, also known as the "Fireworks Galaxy", is an intermediate spiral galaxy about 10 million light-years away, on the border between the constellations Cepheus and Cygnus.

NGC7000 The North America Nebula

The North America Nebula (NGC 7000 or Caldwell 20) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, close to Deneb (the tail of the swan and its brightest star). The remarkable shape of the emission nebula resembles that of the continent of North America, complete with a prominent Gulf of Mexico.

NGC7023 Iris Nebula

The Iris Nebula, also NGC 7023 and Caldwell 4, is a bright reflection nebula and Caldwell object in the constellation Cepheus. NGC 7023 is actually the cluster within the nebula, LBN 487, and the nebula is lit by a magnitude +7 star, SAO 19158. It shines at magnitude +6.8. It is located near the Mira-type variable star T Cephei, and near the bright magnitude +3.23 variable star Beta Cephei (Alphirk). It lies 1,300 light-years away and is six light-years across.
